Garden Diary, 10 September 2007

Just getting back into it now after winter. Planted some raspberry canes that Richard Bushel gave us. We apparently need to wait a couple of years before they really start producing.

Quite a bit more blossom on the apricot this year, maybe 50 blossoms, so maybe we'll get 25 apricots? I'd like to plant up the ground underneath it with a guild of some sort, bulbs, garlic, chives, etc.

Over winter I fixed the spouting on the garage so that all the water from it feeds into our garden just above the strawberries. The weeds certainly seem to be thriving there at the moment :-) The plan is to do the same with the runoff from the front part of the house roof, i.e., feed it into the vege garden, suitable filtered (the potential for heavy metals in roof runoff is a bit of a worry).

My little patch of mesclun on some really crappy ground managed to produce a trickle of salad greens all winter. That was even with Katrina "weeding" it at one stage :-). I'll set up a better bit of ground this year so hopefully we'll have a good supply of salad greens all next winter.

I've added some garlic to the mesclun patch and composted it so we get a steady stream of stuff. The idea is to leave it mostly to its own devices.

All beds dug and mostly all composted now. Plan for this year is in the book.

Planted lots of garlic this year, some around the apricot and the rest at the end of one of the beds. Left a couple of plants to naturalise so will be interesting to see what they do.

Speaking of the apricot, the plan is to develop a guild around it this year. I've got some garic in there, and will plant a ring of daffodils around it whenever you do that. I'll also put some nasturtiums and broad beans in there - hopefully these will grow up the tree trunk, which should make for a nice display. Might also try some sweet peas.
