Garden Diary, 27 January 2008

Eggplant is growing slowly, only about the size of an egg now, but we'll see what happens. We've had a couple of larger cucumbers off the one plant so far, maybe a couple more to go. They're almost too big to use up, though. Peppers are going OK, only one plant producing anything so far, but 4 good-sized fruit on there. Celery doing well, probably should pick it all soon - might try the celery and onion soup recipe :-)

Bed of beetroot, carrots and parnsips a bit slow to get going, although beetroot is doing well now - borscht on the next rainy day :-) The carrots and parsnips did not seem to like being near the garlic at the end of the bed, although the garlic itself has done well. A few spring onions thrown in there about 6 weeks back are growing very slowly now.

Tomatoes are mostly doing well, although they're a bit crowded in with the rhubarb and the ones closet to the rhubarb are pretty small.

Desiree spuds have done well. They taste really good, but they're not a big producer.

The raspberries did fantastically well for their first year - even Richard Bushell was impressed ! We had probably 3-4 punnets off them, and hopefully should get a lot more next year. Strawberries have again been a bit of a disappointment - the ones in the pot did the best of all.

Corn is coming along now, but doesn't seem nearly as advanced as last years pictures (admittedly nearly three weeks later than now). I tried planting them closer together this year and they're not in the greatest spot, getting a lot of evening sun but not much in the morning.

Started another little mesclun bed near the corn. Also, the little guild under the apricot now includes garlic, nasturtiums, and a couple of scarlet runners. I planted some broad beans as wel, but it's probably too early for them. Some peas and pumkins near the corn are flowering now.
